What is the Adi Kailash trek distance?

The Adi Kailash trekking distance from Gunji to Jyolingkong is approximately 16 km one way, making the full round trip around 32 km. However, the majority of this route — roughly 14–15 km — is motorable by 4x4 SUV. The actual walking trek from the road-end to Parvati Sarovar and Gaurikund covers only 4–6 km on foot, gaining around 300–400 metres in elevation. This makes the Adi Kailash yatra accessible even for senior pilgrims and families with children above 10 years.

The trekking terrain is gravel and stone path, generally well-marked. There are no technical sections, rope climbs, or glacier crossings on the standard Adi Kailash darshan circuit. However, altitude awareness is essential — the area sits above 3,400m from Gunji onward, and spending a full day at Gunji before the Jyolingkong excursion helps the body acclimatise. Our guides are trained to monitor altitude sickness symptoms throughout.

For helicopter package pilgrims: The walking requirement at Adi Kailash is the same regardless of how you arrive at Pithoragarh. You will still drive by 4x4 from Gunji to Jyolingkong and walk the 4–6 km trail to Parvati Sarovar. The helicopter only replaces the Delhi–Pithoragarh road journey, not the Gunj

About Adi Kailash

The Chhota Kailash of India Adi Kailash — also known as Chhota Kailash, Baba Kailash, or Little Kailash — is one of the five sacred peaks collectively revered as Panch Kailash in Hindu tradition. Located in the Vyas Valley of the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand, this mountain stands at approximately 6,191 metres and is situated within the restricted Inner Line Permit zone, close to the Indo-Tibetan border.

According to ancient Hindu scriptures and local Kumaoni oral tradition, Adi Kailash is the earthly residence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The name 'Adi' literally means 'first' or 'primordial' — signifying that this was Lord Shiva's original earthly dwelling, predating even his residence at Mount Kailash in Tibet. Legends tell us that Ravana, the great scholar-king, performed intense tapasya at Adi Kailash before receiving divine boons from Mahadev.

The sacred Parvati Sarovar — a high-altitude lake at the base of Adi Kailash — is believed to be the site where Goddess Parvati bathed before her marriage to Lord Shiva. Its waters are considered as holy as the Ganges. Pilgrims who have walked Char Dham Yatra describe the silence at Parvati Sarovar as unlike anything they have experienced at other pilgrimages.

The accessibility of Adi Kailash improved dramatically after the Dharchula–Lipulekh road was upgraded as part of India's border infrastructure programme. Today, the route is motorable up to Jyolingkong — making it possible for senior pilgrims to complete the yatra without strenuous trekking. This is a primary reason why Adi Kailash yatra bookings have grown significantly since 2021, and why the helicopter package option has become increasingly popular among time-conscious devotees.

Important Information & Points to Note

  • Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory. The Adi Kailash and Om Parvat region falls within a restricted border zone. Every pilgrim requires an ILP from the District Magistrate's office in Pith
  • Age limit: 10 to 70 years. As per Uttarakhand authority guidelines. Senior pilgrims above 60 years are advised to carry a recent medical fitness certificate. The helicopter package is strongly recommended for pilgrims above 65.
  • Foreign nationals need extra permissions. Non-Indian citizens require special permissions beyond the ILP. Please contact us at least 45 days in advance for foreign national tour planning.
  • BSNL network only beyond Dharchula. Mobile connectivity is limited to BSNL in most parts of Gunji, Nabi, and the border zone. Private networks (Jio, Airtel) may not function beyond Pithoragarh in many areas. Inform your family in advance.
  • Altitude sickness awareness. Gunji sits at approximately 3,400 metres. Headache, nausea, and breathlessness are possible. Our guides monitor symptoms. Ascent is gradual; acclimatisation is built into the itinerary.
  • Pack warm clothes regardless of season. Nights at Gunji can drop to 0°C–5°C even in June and September. Carry thermal innerwear, a fleece jacket, a windproof outer layer, trekking shoes, and a rain poncho.
  • Helicopter weather dependency. Chartered flights to/from Pithoragarh depend on weather clearance. Nagarjuna Travels will have backup plans and re-scheduling options if weather delays occur. This is rare in the May–June and Sep–Oct windows.
  • Photography & Drone regulations. Photography is permitted at Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. Drone usage near the Indo-Tibetan border is strictly prohibited and can result in equipment confiscation.

Why Book Your Adi Kailash Yatra with Nagarjuna Travels?

We know there are many operators offering Adi Kailash tour packages online. Here is why thousands of pilgrims have chosen Nagarjuna Travels — and why they return.

  • We are based in Pithoragarh. Our office is at Takana Chauraha, Pithoragarh — the gateway district to Adi Kailash. This means real-time road intelligence, on-ground emergency response, and pre-established relationships with local homestays, guides, and the ITBP that no Delhibased operator can replicate.
  • Every yatra has a dedicated trip coordinator. You will have a WhatsApp number for our coordinator who is active throughout your journey — not a call centre operator, but the person physically on the ground.
  • We have completed yatras even during landslides. Our local network means we know alternate routes, have pre-booked backup stays, and can reconfigure itineraries on the fly without pilgrims missing their yatra. Ask us about Devam sir's 2 AM phone call during the 2023 Budhi landslide — that story is in our reviews.
