Overview

A Journey beyond the material world.

There is something different about starting your day in Kathgodam — the steady hum of a diesel engine warming up, your bags packed, and the Himalayas waiting ahead. Our 7-day Adi Kailash Yatra with Munsiyari and Chaukori tour package is designed for pilgrims, families, and Himalayan lovers who want the complete Kumaon experience in a single journey.
Adi Kailash — revered across the Hindu scriptures as Chhota Kailash — sits at over 6,000 metres in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, close to the Indo-Tibetan border. This sacred peak is believed to be Lord Shiva's secondary abode, mirroring the cosmic power of Mount Kailash in Tibet but accessible right within India. Just a short drive from Gunji, the naturally formed 'Om' symbol on Om Parvat's snow face leaves every pilgrim stunned into silence.

After the spiritual high of Adi Kailash and Om Parvat, we extend the journey through the charming villages of Munsiyari and Chaukori — two of the most beautiful and underrated hill stations in Kumaon. This combined Adi Kailash tour package is the only itinerary in the market that brings together the sacred pilgrimage and the scenic splendour of the Kumaon Himalayas in a single, seamless 7-day journey. As a Pithoragarh-based travel company, Nagarjuna Travels brings unmatched local knowledge, pre-cleared permits, trusted mountain stays, and a team that picks up the phone at 2 AM if the roads change. This is not just another tour package — this is a yatra crafted by people who live here

Tour Highlights

    • Darshan of Adi Kailash at Jyolingkong — witness the sacred mountain reflect in the still waters of Parvati Sarovar, one of the most meditative sights in the Himalayas.
    • Om Parvat — the divine 'OM' in snow — drive to Nabidhang and witness the naturally formed OM (ॐ) symbol on the mountain face, visible even from the road.
    • Parvati Sarovar, Gaurikund & Kali Mata Temple — sacred water bodies and ancient shrines that complete the Shiva pilgrimage circuit.
    • Vyas Gufa — the cave where sage Ved Vyas is believed to have composed parts of the Mahabharata, located en route to Jyolingkong.
    • Optional Lipulekh Pass / Kailash Darshan — subject to Indian Army permission, a high-altitude excursion near the India-China-Nepal tri-junction
    • Helicopter return Pithoragarh ® Haldwani — conclude the yatra with one more aerial blessing over the Himalayas on Day 5.

Adi Kailash Trek — Distance, Altitude & Facts

The Adi Kailash trek distance from Gunji to Jyolingkong is approximately 16 km one way, making the full round trip around 32 km. However, the majority of this route — roughly 14–15 km — is motorable by 4x4 SUV. The actual walking trek from the road head at Jyolingkong to Parvati Sarovar and Gaurikund covers only 4–6 km on foot, gaining around 300–400 metres in elevation. This makes the Adi Kailash yatra accessible even for senior pilgrims and families with children above 10 years.

The trekking terrain is gravel and stone path, generally well-marked. There are no technical sections, rope climbs, or glacier crossings involved in the standard Adi Kailash darshan circuit. However, altitude awareness is essential — the area sits above 3,400m from Gunji onward, and spending a full day at Gunji before the Jyolingkong excursion helps the body acclimatise

About Adi Kailash — The Chhota Kailash of India

Adi Kailash — also known as Chhota Kailash, Baba Kailash, or Little Kailash — is one of the five sacred peaks collectively revered as Panch Kailash in Hindu tradition. Located in the Vyas Valley of the Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand, this mountain stands at approximately 6,191 metres and is situated within the restricted Inner Line Permit zone, close to the Indo-Tibetan border.

According to ancient Hindu scriptures and local Kumaoni oral tradition, Adi Kailash is the earthly residence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The name 'Adi' literally means 'first' or 'primordial' — signifying that this was Lord Shiva's original earthly dwelling, predating even his residence at Mount Kailash in Tibet. Legends tell us that Ravana, the great scholar-king, performed intense tapasya at Adi Kailash before receiving divine boons from Mahadev.

The sacred Parvati Sarovar — a high-altitude lake at the base of Adi Kailash — is believed to be the site where Goddess Parvati bathed before her marriage to Lord Shiva. Its waters are considered as holy as the Ganges, and many pilgrims who have walked Char Dham Yatra describe the silence at Parvati Sarovar as unlike anything they have experienced at other pilgrimages. Adjacent Gaurikund and the small but powerful Shiva temple at Jyolingkong complete the sacred circuit.

The accessibility of Adi Kailash dramatically improved after the Dharchula–Lipulekh road was upgraded as part of India's border infrastructure programme. Today, the route is motorable up to Jyolingkong, making it possible for senior pilgrims to complete the yatra without strenuous trekking — a major reason why Adi Kailash yatra bookings have grown significantly since 2021.

Munsiyari — The Hidden Gem of Kumaon

Munsiyari sits at 2,200 metres in the Johar Valley of Pithoragarh district, separated from Tibet by the towering Panchachuli range. The name itself means 'a place with snow' in the Kumaoni language — and that describes it perfectly. On clear mornings, the five Panchachuli peaks (each named for the five Pandava brothers) rise like a fortress wall above the town.

For pilgrims completing the Adi Kailash tour, Munsiyari is a perfect emotional decompression stop — a day or two in gentle mountain surroundings where the body and mind can rest after the intensity of the high-altitude inner zone. For leisure travellers, Munsiyari is an end in itself: it serves as the base for treks to Milam Glacier, Ralam Glacier, and Khaliya Top, and offers some of the finest ridge-top walking in the Kumaon Himalayas.

Key attractions in Munsiyari include: Khaliya Top (3,500m) for sunrise panoramas, Birthi Waterfall (126m cascading fall), Thamri Kund lake for bird-watching, the Tribal Heritage Museum documenting Johari culture, and the old Shauka tribal market selling handwoven woollen products unique to this region.

Important Information & Points to Note

    • Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory. The Adi Kailash and Om Parvat region falls within a restricted border zone. Every pilgrim requires an ILP from the District Magistrate's office in Pithoragarh. Nagarjuna Travels handles this process entirely — carry 4 photocopies of your Aadhaar card or Passport.
    • Age limit: 10 to 70 years. As per Uttarakhand authority guidelines. Senior pilgrims above 60 years are advised to carry a recent medical fitness certificate. Physical activity is minimal if using the vehicle-based access route.
    • Foreign nationals need extra permissions. Non-Indian citizens require special permissions beyond the ILP. Please contact us at least 45 days in advance for foreign national tour planning.
    • BSNL network only beyond Dharchula. Mobile connectivity is limited to BSNL in most parts of Gunji, Nabi, and the border zone. Private networks (Jio, Airtel) do not function beyond Pithoragarh in many areas. Inform your family in advance.
    • Altitude sickness awareness. Gunji sits at approximately 3,400 metres. Headache, nausea, and breathlessness are possible. Our guides monitor symptoms. Ascent is gradual and acclimatisation is built into the itinerary.
    • Pack warm clothes regardless of season. Nights at Gunji can drop to 0°C–5°C even in June and September. Carry thermal innerwear, a fleece jacket, a windproof outer layer, trekking shoes, and a rain poncho.
    • Photography & Drone regulations. Photography is permitted at Adi Kailash and Om Parvat. Drone usage near the Indo-Tibetan border is strictly prohibited and can result in equipment confiscation.

    Why Book With Nagarjuna Travels?

    • We know there are many operators offering Adi Kailash tour packages online. Here is why thousands of pilgrims have chosen Nagarjuna Travels for their yatra — and why they come back.
    • We are based in Pithoragarh. Our office is at Takana Chauraha, Pithoragarh — the gateway district to Adi Kailash. This means we have real-time road information, on-ground emergency response, and pre-established relationships with local homestays, guides, and the ITBP that no Delhi-based operator can match.
    • Every yatra has a dedicated trip coordinator. You will have a WhatsApp number for our coordinator who is active throughout your journey — not a call centre, but the person actually on the ground.
    • Our reviews speak for themselves. Pilgrims consistently highlight that 'Devam sir picked up the phone at 2 AM during a landslide' — this is the standard of support we deliver, not an exception.
    • We have completed Adi Kailash yatras even during landslides. Our local network means we know alternate routes, have pre-booked backup stays, and can reconfigure itineraries on the fly without pilgrims losing their yatra.
    • Customisable itineraries. Want to add Narayan Ashram? Darma Valley? Panchachuli Base Camp? We build these extensions for groups willing to extend their journey.

    Itinerary

    A Sacred Progression

    01

    Day 1: Kathgodam → Almora → Pithoragarh

Early morning pickup from Kathgodam station and a scenic 5–6 hour drive up into the hills. On the way, you'll stop at Jageshwar Dham — a beautiful ancient temple complex tucked among tall deodar trees — and a quiet pause at Dol Ashram. By evening you arrive at Pithoragarh, often called the Mini Kashmir of Uttarakhand.
    02

Day 2: Pithoragarh → Dharchula → Gunji / Nabi Village

Drive along the stunning Kali River gorge to Dharchula — the last big town before the restricted zone. The team handles all Inner Line Permit paperwork here so you don't have to worry about a thing. After lunch, the road takes you higher through remote villages and prayer-flag-lined passes to Gunji or Nabi at around 3,400m.
    03

    Day 3: Gunji → Jyolingkong → Gunji

The day every pilgrim looks forward to. A 4x4 drive to Jyolingkong brings you face to face with the snow-covered peak of Adi Kailash, perfectly reflected in the still waters of Parvati Sarovar. Spend peaceful time at the lake, offer prayers at Gaurikund, and visit Vyas Gufa — the ancient cave where sage Ved Vyas is said to have meditated. Most people say this place feels different from anywhere else they've been.
    04

    Day 4: Nabi → Nabidhang → Dharchula

Drive to Nabidhang for a clear view of Om Parvat — a mountain where the snow naturally forms the shape of OM (ॐ). It's one of those sights that makes people go completely quiet. Visit the small but powerful Kali Mata Temple nearby. If army permission comes through, a visit to Lipulekh Pass near the India-China-Nepal tri-junction is also possible. Head back down to Dharchula in the afternoon.
    05

    Day 5: Dharchula → Thal → Munsiyari

A lovely 5–6 hour drive that opens up from gorge roads to wide valley views. Make a stop at Birthi Waterfall — a 126-metre cascade that's well worth 20 minutes of your time. Arrive in Munsiyari, a beautiful village at 2,200m surrounded by the five peaks of Panchachuli. If the sky is clear in the evening, the sunset on those peaks turns from gold to deep pink — it's something else.
    06

    Day 6: Munsiyari → Chaukori / Berinag

Start the morning with a gentle 4 km walk up to Khaliya Top for sunrise views over Nanda Devi and the Nepal ranges — totally worth the early alarm. After breakfast, explore the Tribal Heritage Museum and the local market before driving to Chaukori, Kumaon's quietest hill station, known for its organic tea gardens and sweeping 360° Himalayan views.
    07

    Day 7: Chaukori → Almora → Kathgodam

A quiet final morning in the hills before the 6–7 hour drive back to Kathgodam. Stop in Almora for a proper Kumaoni thali lunch and browse the market for pine honey, woollen shawls, and Aipan handicrafts — good things to take home. The team drops you at Kathgodam station by early evening, and you head back carrying a whole lot of peace.
